“If You’re Fighting with the Public Health Experts, You’re Politicizing This. And If You’re Aligning with Them, Then You’re Depoliticizing It”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – During a House Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee hearing today, Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) called on the Trump Administration to end its politically motivated efforts to undermine America’s COVID-19 response, to listen to public health experts and to help restore public confidence in a potential COVID-19 vaccine.

“I’m very concerned about this declining confidence we see in the public when it comes to the COVID vaccine that we’re working on,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “We’ve seen that confidence decline over the last few months pretty precipitously.”

Sarbanes continued: “In a Pew survey, only 51 percent of U.S. adults now would get a vaccine if one were available – and that’s down from 72 percent in May. And a Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 62 percent of Americans worry that political pressure from the Trump Administration would lead FDA to rush in its approval of a vaccine without making sure that it’s safe and effective. So that’s not a good situation to be in. That’s very alarming as we’re trying to tackle this pandemic.”

Sarbanes concluded: “… We could go a long way towards restoring trust, could we not, if the President, if the Administration – the political people … align themselves with the public health experts and follow them? … If you’re fighting with the public health experts, you’re politicizing this. And if you’re aligning with them, then you’re depoliticizing it.”
