Good increase for 2021 – bad prospects for the years after

The defense policy spokesman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Henning Otte, said about the proposed government draft for the 2021 defense budget on Wednesday:

“The present draft for the defense budget 2021 has two faces. The increase from currently 45.6 billion to 46.8 billion euros is important and correct. The security situation and the state of the Bundeswehr continue to require heavy investments in our armed forces. In the financial planning for the following years up to 2024, however, no further increases are planned – in fact, the defense budget is even expected to decrease again. But we must continue on the path we have chosen to modernize our armed forces.

It is urgent to invest in the operational readiness of the Bundeswehr. Large and important procurement projects such as the euro drone and the marine on-board helicopter have to be financed. Our army, which bears the brunt of the operations, urgently needs modern armored personnel carriers.

It is important that Germany remains a reliable partner in NATO. Because only if we make the appropriate contribution that we have promised our allies will our allies be ready to stand up for us. “
