Vienna, Austria, 30 September 2020–The OPEC Secretariat held today the 18th Coordination Meeting on Climate Change via videoconference.
In his remarks, OPEC Secretary General, HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, reiterated the importance of multilateral discussions and international cooperation in addressing current climate change challenges in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Secretary General noted that with the unprecedented challenges facing us today, multilateralism could assist in identifying amicable sustainable solutions, adding that to find those practical, fair, inclusive and sustainable solutions, we need to work together.
HE Barkindo said that OPEC has been facing these challenges head-on, though this battle is far from over. He added that the success achieved through the Declaration of Cooperation and the Charter of Cooperation further demonstrates that multilateralism and international cooperation are imperative and do work.
The Secretary General concluded with quoting the great leader Martin Luther King, Jr., who said: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
