The Transport Department today announced that free, voluntary COVID-19 tests will be arranged for taxi and public light bus (PLB) drivers starting October 3.

Two rounds of testing will be provided, with the first round to be held from October 3 to 16, and the second round from October 27 to November 9.

Fourteen temporary centres set up for distributing and collecting specimen collection kits will start service gradually from October 3.

Taxi and minibus drivers holding valid driver identity plates can visit the temporary centres to collect the specimen collection kit.

They must register their personal information online, self-collect the deep throat saliva specimens and return them to the temporary centres on the same day.

The testing agency will collect the specimens and deliver them to the laboratory for testing. As no personal information will be indicated on the specimen bottles, the agency will only have records of the specimen bottles’ barcode numbers and will not collect personal data.

Drivers will be notified of a negative test result by SMS through their mobile phones. Cases with positive test results will be relayed to the Centre for Health Protection for follow-up.

To encourage participation, taxi drivers who have received an SMS of a negative test result can collect an Anti-epidemic Tag for Taxi Drivers from trade organisations joining the tag scheme, and display the tag at a prominent position in the taxi for passengers to check.
