Now quick help is needed – then consistent support to stabilize the country
A devastating detonation caused devastation in the port of Beirut yesterday. Over 100 people were killed and thousands injured. The foreign policy spokesman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the German Bundestag, Jürgen Hardt, explains:
“The pictures and reports from Beirut shake us all. This massive explosion now follows the ongoing political crisis and the rampant corona pandemic. Lebanon is devastated by it. The CDU / CSU parliamentary group expresses its deepest sympathy to the relatives of the victims. We wish the many injured people a speedy recovery. Among them are numerous employees from international aid organizations and other organizations, the German Embassy and the UN mission UNIFIL. Our thoughts are also with all these people who make an important contribution to the stability of Lebanon.
Now it is important to fully clarify the background and the course of the explosion and to draw the right conclusions. One thing is clear, however: Lebanon has long been experiencing a deep and externally fueled political crisis that has systematically weakened state institutions and functions. Iran is primarily responsible for this weakening. It has built up parallel structures in Lebanon via Hezbollah and has deliberately undermined state institutions.
In the short term, Germany and the international community must provide Lebanon with every conceivable aid to remedy the damage caused by the explosion. In the medium term, however, the focus must be on strengthening the country’s state and democratic institutions. Lebanon must find stability. The European Union can be an important partner for this. What is clear is that there can be no stability with Hezbollah. ”
