In the special regime correctional colony in Engels, the existing book fund is being restored and the selection of specialized literature for those serving sentences with limited health is expanding.
IK-13 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Saratov Region contains convicts who have committed grave and especially grave crimes. The sentences imposed by the court for some are up to twenty years or more. In such a situation, for most of them, books become both the main assistant in search of answers to especially exciting questions, and a way of moving to another reality, where together with the heroes of works you can live a more interesting life, and a source of gaining a spiritual and moral basis for building your future after liberation.
That is why the regular readers of the library IK-13 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Saratov region, which has a book fund of more than 7,200 copies, are three quarters of the convicts serving sentences here.
In addition, a literary circle has been working in the institution for several years. It is visited by fifteen convicts who are not only fond of reading, but also study various literary genres, biographies of their favorite authors, take part in the preparation of thematic exhibitions and educational events for other convicts.
It was they who, within the framework of the All-Russian action “Your friends are books”, which takes place in penitentiary institutions from July 31 to August 7 of this year, invited all readers visiting the library of IK-13 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Saratov Region, if they wish, to join the process of restoration of the book fund correctional colony. About ten convicts have already responded to the proposal. The administration of the institution provided book lovers with all the materials necessary for this important work.
Also, within the framework of established cooperation with the Saratov Regional Special Library for the Blind, the institution is provided with specialized literature in Braille, the selection of which is regularly updated.
During the campaign “Your friends are books”, three visually impaired convicts serving sentences in IK-13 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Saratov Region had another opportunity to get acquainted with the masterpieces of classical literature – a special stand with audio books and the possibility of listening to them was installed in the institution’s library.
Kirill Krivoy, Deputy Head of IK-13 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Saratov Region, noted that the administration of the institution creates for all convicts, including those with disabilities, equal conditions for spiritual and moral development, raising the educational and cultural level, and the library of the correctional colony, increasing the book fund and the organization of work of which much attention is paid, plays a decisive role in solving these problems.
