Las Cruces, NM–Today, Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02) issued the following statement after cosponsoring the Justice in Policing Act, legislation that aims to reform public safety measures and foster working relationships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve:
“It is long past time that our nation takes on the systemic racism that persists within it. But let me be clear, I do not support defunding the police. New measures require investment and should be met with the funds necessary to achieve the reform we seek. We must implement real change that ushers meaningful reform and accountability measures that keep our communities safe.
“The Justice in Policing Act makes these significant strides towards the type of comprehensive reform urgently needed in our policing and criminal justice systems. The legislation would, among other things, ban chokeholds, increase reporting for use of force, and mandate body cameras – measures that many departments in New Mexico have already proactively implemented. It would improve and increase training as well as standardize safeguards that hold our law enforcement officers accountable to their highest standard: to protect and serve.”
