Press release No. 223 of 19. June 2020

WIESBADEN – Germany’s population grew in the year 2019 147 000 people ( 0,2%). The end of the year 2019 83.2 million people in Germany lived with it. As the Federal Statistical office (Destatis) further reports, has slowed the rate of population growth compared to the previous year, in the year 2018, there had been an increase of 227 000 persons or 0.3%. Since 2011, the population grew steadily. The annual increase slowed after the immigration-related record growth in the year 2015 ( 978 000 or 1.2 %) and fell back in 2019, about on the level of the year 2012 ( 196 000, respectively, to 0.2 %).

The increase in the number of inhabitants in the year 2019 is due to the fact that, according to preliminary results, about 300 000 people more than left. Compared to 2018, the so-called migration has decreased excess (2018: 400 000 persons). At the same time, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births to 161 000 (birth deficit in 2018: 167 000 people). Thus, both net Migration and the Birth rate were lower than in the previous year. As a result, the population growth was lower overall than in the previous year.

The number of inhabitants in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Berlin, rose the most

The population development varied from region to region: the Absolute number of inhabitants rose to the strongest in Bavaria ( 48 000), followed by Baden-Württemberg ( 30 900) and Berlin ( 24 700). In percentage terms, Berlin ( 0.7 %), in Brandenburg, Bavaria, and Hesse (0.4 %) had the highest growth. In contrast, the number of inhabitants decreased most in terms of percentage, in Saxony-Anhalt (-13 500 or -0.6%) and Thuringia (-9 800 or -0.5 %) and in the Saarland (-3 600, or -0.4 %). For the Former Federal region (without Berlin), the total population increase of 143 700 persons ( 0,2 %). In the new länder (without Berlin) the population decreased by a total of 20 800 people (of -0.2%). An exception to the Trend in the East of Brandenburg, was due to the proximity to Berlin, with an increase of 10 000 inhabitants.
