New York (Jun 19/20). The elections for the President of the General Assembly, the 5 Non-Permanent Members of the Security Council, and the 18 members of the United Nations Economic and Social Council – Ecosoc were held between Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

The ambassador and permanent representative of Colombia to the United Nations, Guillermo Fernández De Soto, attended the New York headquarters in person and exercised the right to vote for our country as a member of this organization.

During these votes, Ambassador Volkan Bozkir of Turkey was elected as President of the 75th regular session of the United Nations General Assembly.

For their part, the Republic of Ireland, the Republic of India, the United Mexican States, the Republic of Kenya and the Kingdom of Norway were elected as Non-Permanent Members of the United Nations Security Council for the period 2021-2022.

As new members of Ecosoc, for the period 2021 – 2023, Germany, Argentina, Austria, Bolivia, Bulgaria, France, Guatemala, Indonesia, Solomon Islands, Japan, Madagascar, Mexico, Nigeria, Liberia, Libya, Portugal, and the United Kingdom were elected. and Zimbabwe.

At the end of the day, Ambassador Fernández de Soto expressed his sincere congratulations to the new President of the General Assembly, the new members of the Security Council and of Ecosoc, with the conviction that their work will be essential to contribute to peace and security. international, as well as advance in the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals.
