The Federal Cabinet today approved the trio EU Council Presidency’s 18-month program. The so-called “trio program” forms the common thematic framework for the three upcoming EU Council presidencies of Germany, Portugal and Slovenia in the period from July 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Altmaier: “The next 18 months of our trio presidency will be decisive for coping with the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. Together with the trio partners and the other EU member states, we will do everything we can to ensure that the economic upturn is successful, that our competitiveness and innovative strength are strengthened, and that employment and prosperity are created. Pandemic is the right focus to lead the EU out of the crisis and on a sustainable path. Economic policy issues are high on the agenda of the program. Among other things, the restoration and further development of the EU internal market, the strengthening of small and medium-sized enterprises and industrial competitiveness, the expansion of the EU’s digital and technological sovereignty and the importance of open and rule-based trade are highlighted, with the approval of the Federal Government and the governments The draft text for the tri-program will be sent to the other EU Member States in Portugal and Slovenia and is due to be approved by the General Affairs Council on 16 June. On July 1, 2020, Germany becomes the first trio partner to take over the EU Council Presidency.
