Press Release

COLUMBUS, GA – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement regarding justice for George Floyd:

“This week, our nation lost another African American man to police brutality. George Floyd should still be here with us today. There is no way around that fact—his death cannot be justified, nor should it be. We see unjustified killings of African Americans far too often and reform is desperately needed. Charging Derek Chauvin is a step in the right direction, but we must ask why he was given so many chances to abuse his power. I remain a strong supporter of law enforcement, but it has long been clear that not everyone is cut out for the job and there are deep racial wounds that need to be addressed. An officer with 18 brutality complaints fully fits that description and should have been held accountable long ago. ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’”
