Press Release

Washington D.C.— Congressman Denver Riggleman is co-sponsoring a resolution to condemn the Communist Chinese Government for newly proposed legislation that would undo the autonomy Hong Kong has had since 1984. The proposed Chinese legislation would ban secession, subversion of state power, foreign interference, and terrorism, as defined by the Communist Chinese Government.  This law would be used to jail and harass peaceful protestors, and crack-down on any attempt to self govern in Hong Kong. The Resolution calls upon all free nations to stand firm against the Chinese Communist Party’s campaign to destroy basic liberties and human rights held by the people of Hong Kong.

“The Hong Kong national security law proposed by the Government of the People’s Republic of China is a gross violation of the rights of those who want freedom in Hong Kong,” said Congressman Riggleman. “I am proud to sponsor this resolution and stand with the people of Hong Kong during their time of need.”

The resolution, which was introduced by Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) during a Pro-forma session this morning, would condemn the Communist Chinese Government for their actions and show support for the people of Hong Kong and their freedom. A companion bill was introduced in the Senate by Senator Cotton (R-Ark.) and Senator Hawley (R-Mo.).

Congressman Riggleman is a co-chair of the China Task Force pillars of National Security and Technology.
