The Coronavirus Public Safety and Economic Recovery Act would protect employees and consumers, provide liability protection to employers

Knoxville, Tenn. (May 1, 2020) — Today, Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) introduced the Coronavirus Public Safety and Economic Recovery Act, legislation to prepare businesses and organizations across the United States for operations as the economy reopens amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This legislation also offers liability protections to those employers that follow approved guidance on keeping employees and customers safe.

“The goal isn’t just to get people back to work, but to get people back to work in a safe environment,” said Rep. Burchett. “Workers and customers deserve to know that businesses are taking steps to protect them, and employers deserve to know they won’t face frivolous lawsuits if they’re following official health and safety guidelines.”

Rep. Burchett’s legislation would require the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to work with public health experts from various levels of governments, small business owners, governors, and members of the President’s Economic Recovery Task Force to establish guidelines for protecting consumers and employees from the coronavirus when participating in the reopened economy.

Businesses that adhere to these established guidelines will be offered some civil liability protection under federal law. Additionally, this bill encourages state governments to adopt similar legislation protecting employees and employers where federal law doesn’t reach.

Currently several states are implementing phased economic reopening plans.

“Reopening economies across America while also protecting against the coronavirus requires stakeholder input from various levels of government and business,” said Rep. Burchett. “With states and the federal government working together to establish and follow clear guidance, public health can be protected and our nation’s economy preserved.”
