Source: Die Linke “May 1st will take place this year under exceptional conditions – without rallies and demonstrations on streets and squares. Nevertheless, it is important to make our demands clear right now, because in times of crisis as we are experiencing them, the injustices and imbalances in the world of work only come to the fore. It is now becoming clear that the neoliberal labor market policies of the past few years are absolutely not fit for the crisis. The majority of the employees are left in the rain, ”explains Susanne Ferschl, deputy chairwoman of the DIE LINKE parliamentary group. Ferschl continued: “We now need a rescue package for employees and the short-time allowance to be increased to at least 90 percent – immediately and not only after six months. Otherwise, employees in the low-wage sector in particular face existential emergencies. It is estimated that there are several million people currently receiving short-time work benefits. At the same time, applications for Hartz IV go through the roof and make it clear that for most people the money is insufficient. Politics for the center means helping these people quickly and without red tape. The federal government must finally throw its anti-employee policy overboard, and the extension of the daily working hours of employees in critical infrastructure to up to twelve hours must be rejected. It is the opposite of health protection. Instead, we need more staff, shorter working hours, good collective wages and a poverty-proof minimum wage as the lower wage limit – all of which DIE LINKE has been demanding for a long time – and now more than ever. Precarious employment such as fixed-term contracts, temporary agency work and mini jobs are not crisis-proof. We finally need nationwide wage agreements, good employment relationships subject to social security contributions and more employee participation. The privatization circus in the healthcare system must be put to an end: preventive healthcare belongs to the state. A hospital must not have to make economic profits. For a strong, crisis-proof welfare state, we need better social security systems. May 1st is therefore even more important than usual this year, because it is important to advance these demands. Exemplary in my constituency is the Voith Turbo plant, which despite the corona pandemic went on an indefinite strike to fight the impending plant closure. This crisis is also an opportunity – but we have to seize it! ”
