Comment on the potential for use of smart phones in the COVID-19 response.
Dr Al Edwards, School of Pharmacy, University of Reading, said:
“The power of smartphones can also help in our need to test, test, test.
“Over the past few years smartphone cameras have become increasingly used to accurately record the results of miniaturised diagnostic tests, replacing laboratory instruments. Our own group uses smartphone cameras to conduct high performance blood and microbiology tests. I expect to see intensive efforts to exploit smartphone-powered diagnostics as we try to test as many people, as safely as possible.
“Of course, with any diagnostic testing, it remains vital that they are fully validated and used under healthcare professional supervision- a bad test is still worse than no test.”
