Washington, DC – Congressman John Joyce, M.D. (PA-13) released the following statement after President Trump declared a national emergency in response to the spread of COVID-19, also called coronavirus.
“As we combat the spread of coronavirus across the country, it is important that we remain calm and at the same time take this risk seriously. Our nation is fortunate to have the best public health system in the world, and our experts are working tirelessly to protect the American people. Taking preemptive action to stop the spread of coronavirus today will save lives tomorrow.
“The U.S. government and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have taken critical actions to protect our communities. By declaring a national emergency, President Trump has empowered the federal government and states to get ahead of coronavirus, spur innovation, and limit Americans’ exposure to the virus.
“As a doctor and a Member of Congress, I encourage all Pennsylvanians to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health – which includes avoiding large events and being smart about visiting crowded spaces – in addition to the commonsense handwashing and hygiene measures that will stop the spread of coronavirus.
“As this situation progresses, I will continue to provide updates to PA-13 constituents. My offices are open for business, and my team and I are working to serve the people of southwestern and southcentral Pennsylvania.”
