Homicide Squad detectives are investigating after three people died and a woman sustained critical injuries during incidents in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs overnight.
Police including officers from the Critical Incident Response Team responded to reports of a man with suspected stab wounds in Kew.
He was located with critical injuries near Cotham Road and Queen Street about 12.15am.
The victim was conveyed to hospital where he sadly died and is yet to be formally identified.
A second man was located nearby in Walton Street, he sustained fatal gunshot wounds after police discharged their firearms while attempting to arrest him.
He is yet to be formally identified.
Police are investigating whether this incident is linked to two others which occurred late last night.
The first happened about 10.40pm on Wednesday evening at Jolimont Railway Station.
It is understood an unknown man approached a PSO and engaged in conversation before assaulting him with an edged weapon and fleeing the scene on foot.
The PSO sustained non-life-threatening cuts to the upper body and was transported to hospital for treatment.
Shortly after this, two women were located in a vehicle with what appeared to be life threatening stab wounds in Hawthorn.
Emergency services were called to Coppin Grove about 11.20pm last night and the women were transported to hospital.
One of the women sadly died in hospital and the second remains in a critical condition.
Investigators are working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the three incidents in order to determine if they are linked.
At this stage, police are not searching for anyone else in relation to the incidents and there is not believed to be any ongoing risk to community safety.
The investigation is ongoing and will have oversight by Professional Standards Command, as per protocol when any police firearm is discharged.
