Croatia’s areas of karst pastures were embroiled in the Croatian War of Independence, after which the population migrated away, but now there is a strong interest in returning to these areas. However, the most significant problem they face is that they are not eligible to receive support.
There are 1 116 000 hectares of karst pastures in the Republic of Croatia, but only 72 440 hectares are registered with the Paying Agency for Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development (ARKOD).
Can Croatia seek a derogation for incorrectly negotiated agricultural land, such as was sought by nine other Member States (Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom), in accordance with Regulation 1307/2013?
Those Member States were granted increased agricultural land on the basis of the derogation and, consequently, an increased financial envelope.
