Source: Republic of France in FrenchLa French Republic has issued the following statement:

On 12 February, the blue helmets of the operation DAMAN gathered on the place d’armes of the camp Naqoura in South Lebanon, to pay tribute to brigadier Erwan Potter, hunter of the 501st Regiment de Chars de Combat, who died in Lebanon as a result of a traffic accident in 2018.

“We are gathered today to honor the memory of one of our own : the brigadier Erwan Potter, the 501st Regiment de Chars de Combat, was seriously injured two years ago to the day in the accident involving his light armored vehicle near Dayr Kifa and died for France on may 21, 2019, after having courageously led his long and painful last fight “. The words of general of brigade Frédéric Boucher, chief of staff of UNIFIL and the military representative of France to the South of Lebanon, are solemn.

Accompanied by a delegation of the 501st regiment de chars de combat, the blue helmets French pay tribute to one of their brothers-in-arms, who bore also the same values of peace and solidarity. “The brigadier Erwan Potter had made the same choice as you to serve in France in his army, it was like you volunteer for this operation in Lebanon, and he was aware of the risks of our business. The tribute that we pay him today is also an opportunity for each of us to meditate on his example and reflect on the meaning of our commitment “, continued the general, Butcher.

On the occasion of this ceremony, the name of the brigadier Erwan Potter has been inscribed on the war memorial and a wreath was made in homage to all the “old Lebanon” fallen in the service of peace.

The general Butcher also recalled the uniqueness of the military profession and its absolute requirement in the service of France. “Today, the name of Erwan Potter comes to be added to the too long list of French soldiers fallen on the soil of lebanon. To honor their memories is obviously essential. It is our duty, but it is far from sufficient. To be and remain particularly worthy of them and of their sacrifice in the daily exercise of our missions. Their memory obliges us ! “.

In the framework of the operation Daman, nearly 700 French military and an infantry company Finnish contribute to the United Nations interim force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in arming a portion of his staff and the Force Commander Reserve of the operation. This reserve unit and the intervention of the UNIFIL carries out its missions on the whole area of the South-Lebanon in close cooperation with the lebanese armed forces.
