Today, February 14, in the Ministry of sports of the Russian Federation held the draw for the FIDE candidates Tournament. The event was held by Minister of sport of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin, President of the International chess Federation Arkady Dvorkovich and the famous tennis player Anastasia Myskina.

“I’m honored tonight to draw in the candidates Tournament, –said Oleg Matytsin. Chess have a great tradition in our country. I think that chess is the one activity that helps to achieve results not only in sports but also in life. We discuss the idea that chess was one of the parts of the educational program in schools. This is an important element of education and intellectual development. I hope that the candidates Tournament will be held at the highest level.”

“We are pleased that Russia is again entrusted with hosting such a major international chess competitions, – said Arkady Dvorkovich. – Russia’s long – standing partner of FIDE. History of chess in Russia – the richest of all countries. The candidates tournament that will take place in Yekaterinburg, it is the most important step in the fight for the world chess crown. The participation of chess players from five countries: Russia, China, Azerbaijan, Netherlands, United States. The forces are equal. All players are at the beginning of the world table of ranks. We thank the chess Federation of Russia, Ministry of sport of the Russian Federation and all our partners for supporting this competition.”

According to the rules the representatives of the same country must play each other at the start of each round: Chinese players Ding Liren and Wang Hao – 1 and 8 rounds

The results of the draw, the participants got the following starting numbers:1. Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan) 2. Ding Liren (China)3. Anish Giri (Netherlands) 4. Alexander Grischuk (Russia)5. Kirill Alekseenko (Russia) 6. Ian Nepomniatchi (Russia) 7. Wang Hao (China) 8. Fabiano Caruana (USA)

The FIDE candidates tournament is one of the key events in the chess world, which will be held from 16 March to 4 April 2020 in Yekaterinburg. The winner enters the match with world champion Magnus Carlsen (Norway).
