Press Release

(WASHINGTON, DC)  Today, Rep. Grace F. Napolitano (D-El Monte) announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) is providing $393,200,000 for Whittier Narrows Dam as part of its Dam Safety and Seepage Program.

“On behalf of San Gabriel Valley residents and millions more throughout the region, I am thrilled to announce hundreds of millions of dollars for Whittier Narrows Dam, one of the most important flood control projects in the country,” Napolitano said. “Since first learning about flood risk concerns, I have encouraged the Corps to make Whittier Narrows the top budgetary priority, and I am glad it has taken this request seriously by providing significant funding for this dam safety program. I will continue to work closely with the Corps as this project moves forward to ensure these improvements are completed in an expeditious manner.”

The Army Corps of Engineers’ Budget and Work Plan, which were released today, include a total of $393.2 million for the Whittier Narrows Dam Safety and Seepage Program. Napolitano secured this money through her leadership on the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment and through multiple hearings, meetings, legislation, and letters with the Corps.

“This dam safety work is needed not only for proper flood control for our area, but also for water supply operations,” Napolitano added. “Whittier Narrows is an extremely important water supply facility for our region as water is captured during storm events and channeled to local spreading basins for recharge into the groundwater basin. These aquifers have been depleted by recent droughts in Southern California. The water captured at Whittier Narrows for groundwater replenishment is a vital source of water for our community.”

Napolitano is the Chairwoman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Water Resources  and Environment, which has jurisdiction over the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Last year she and Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez spearheaded a letter with other local Representatives to House Appropriators requesting over $100 million in funding for Whittier Narrows. Napolitano has directly advocated for funding for this project over the past decade.
