On 23 January, at around 08: 00, a vehicle Shell (Truck Tanker Tanker of the Front Extended Capacity) of the force Barkhane has been damaged by the explosion of an improvised explosive device a few kilometers to the east of Timbuktu. The vehicle was engaged in a refueling mission.

The explosion of FDI has triggered a departure of fire at the level of the cab of the vehicle, quickly mastered. The 2 soldiers who were there were able to exit the vehicle for safety. Wounded, their vital prognosis is not engaged. They were evacuated by helicopter and will be repatriated to France within hours next. The impact of the explosion was mitigated by the shielding of the cabin.

Conduct by the French armed forces, in partnership with the countries of the G5 Sahel, operation Barkhane was launched on August 1, 2014. It is based on a strategic approach based on a logic of partnership with the main countries of the band sahelo-saharan africa (BSS) : Burkina-Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad. It includes approximately 4,700 military whose mission is to fight against the armed groups of terrorists and support the armed forces of partner countries so that they can take into account this threat, notably in the framework of the joint force of the G5 Sahel currently operational.
