Source: Republic of France in FrenchLa French Republic has issued the following statement:
Geneviève Darrieussecq, State secretary to the minister for the Armed forces, will be on Monday 20 January 2020 in Bandol (Var) in order to inaugurate, along with the mayor of the city, Jean-Paul Joseph, a place named in homage to the fighters in south africa who contributed to the liberation of France during the Second world War. The square in front of the town hall of the commune will be appointed as the “Square of the Liberators of africa” and will accommodate a plaque bearing the names of 5 fighters from Algeria died in August 1944 during the liberation of the city.
This inauguration is the first realization of the call launched by the President of the Republic at the 75th anniversary of the landing of Provence in August last year. On this occasion, he had paid tribute to the african fighters and expressed his wish that the mayors of France are to live the memory of these men by giving their names to streets, squares or schools.
Thanks to an agreement signed by Geneviève Darrieussecq the 20 last November with the Association of mayors of France and the presidents of intercommunal cooperation (MFA), the ministry of the Armed forces provides assistance to communities wishing to honor these veterans by providing them with a list of 100 names of african fighters. The national Office of veterans and war victims (ONACVG) and the historical Service of Defense (SHD) accompany each commune in search of a name fighter who participated in his release.
