Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses following a robbery in Bonn Square, Oxford, last night (30/12).
At around 7.50pm, the victim, a 40-year-old man, was approached by a group of youths outside the Art Café and one of these sprayed an unknown substance into the victim’s face before snatching his bag containing a quantity of cash, a bottle of wine and some clothing.
The group of up to seven youths then ran off.
The square was busy with members of the public at the time of the incident.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Rebecca Nightingale of Oxford CID, said: “This incident happened at a busy time of the evening and there were a large number of people in the square at the time.
“I am appealing to anybody that was in the area who witnessed this incident to please make contact with police on the 24-hour non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 43190455801.
“At the time of the incident, the No 3 bus was passing by, and so I am also appealing to anybody that was on that bus that may have seen this incident to please get in touch.
“During this incident, the victim had something sprayed into his eyes that made them sting before his bag was taken.
“He is otherwise unhurt, and I am urging anybody with any information relating to this to contact us.”
Notes to editors: A 14-year-old boy from Oxford has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and remains in police custody at this time.
