St Albans residents have escaped a fire which broke out in a bathroom of a home on Leonard Avenue just before 5pm.

Initial crews arrived on scene within seven minutes, and called for additional resources after seeing a large amount of smoke while en route.

Approximately 30 firefighters worked to control a fire in the roof of a 20m x 10m home.

Wearing breathing apparatus for protection from the smoke, crews removed tiles from the roof to attack the fire, in a bid to stop it from spreading to neighbouring properties.

Their efforts ensured the fire was brought under control in less than half an hour.

Thankfully the occupants managed to escape to safety.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria are on scene assisting MFB.

At the height of the fire there were 11 appliances on scene including seven pumpers, a rescue unit and three other units.
