Bougainville – After twenty years of bloody civil war, which has made 15 thousand victims, has been launched on the referendum for the independence of the island of Bougainville from Papua New Guinea. The referendum, which takes place between 23 November and 7 December 2019, provides for a consultation that will last two weeks. However, there are fears of the Catholic Professionals Society of Papua New Guinea, the body of catholic professionals who are concerned about some of the comments that have doubts about the validity of the Constitution of Bougainville. “The freedom of speech is a guaranteed right of every citizen, including those of Bougainville, however, caution on the spread of opinions on the referendum is currently in progress,” reads a note of the body, which was received by the Agency Fides. “We want to warn those who comment publicly on the referendum. We do not know on what legal basis the constitutional are spread these comments. However, we believe that all the actions taken so far are conducted in line with the national Constitution”, underlines the President Paul Harricknen.
