San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in commemoration of Veterans Day, which is observed every year on November 11th:
“On Veterans Day, a grateful nation gives thanks for the heroism and indominable spirit of the 22 million veterans who have fought for freedom around the world and strengthened our democracy here at home. The brave men and women of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserves reflect the highest ideals of our country, and America must continue to honor their service and sacrifice, not just today, but every day.
“Our Democratic Majority is upholding our responsibility to our veterans, their families and caregivers by fighting to bolster the four walls of VA. Guided by the unwavering leadership of Chairman Takano and Chairwoman Wasserman Schultz, their Committees have held 32 hearings and passed 25 bipartisan bills on the Floor, and are now advancing robust legislation that provides equity for women veterans accessing VA. Democrats have worked across the aisle to secure historic funding levels for VA’s mental health and suicide prevention initiatives, passed fixes to end unjust and unfair taxes on military families and expanded benefits for Blue Water Navy Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange. Democrats are proud of these achievements, but we cannot rest until every veteran – regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation – has the benefits they have earned and the support and care they need to thrive as they transition into civilian life.
“Seventy-five years ago, our brave troops stormed the beaches of Normandy and embarked on a hard winter as the Battle of the Bulge neared. That same year, Congress passed the landmark GI Bill, which forever transformed our economy and our nation, providing a ladder of opportunity for all those who risked all to defend America. For generations, the Congress has endeavored in a bipartisan way to build on this historic investment to repay the sacrifice of our brave servicemembers. We will continue to advance progress to expand the promise of quality, affordable education, create good-paying jobs and ensure access to world-class health care. This Veterans Day, Democrats reaffirm our bedrock promise that just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran behind when they return home.”
