The minister of foreign Affairs, the honourable asked by chrystia Freeland, made today the following statement :

“Canada welcomes the call for new elections in Bolivia by the election observation mission of the Organization of american States (OAS) in the country.

“The results of the audit of the mission of the OAS demonstrate serious deficiencies in the conduct and counting of the vote of October 20, 2019. It is clear that the will of the bolivian people and the democratic process have not been respected.

“Canada is also calling for the reinstatement of an independent electoral authority and impartial in Bolivia to carry out this process, under the supervision of an international monitoring mission to be robust led by the OAS.

“For the moment, it is essential that all political and social actors in Bolivia to exercise restraint and avoid violence and confrontation.

“Canada welcomes the invaluable work done by the verification mission of the OAS in order to ensure a fair and transparent process, a process that Canada supported financially and through its expertise.

“Canada’s support for the Bolivia and the democratic will of the bolivian people. We take note of the resignation of president Morales and will continue to support Bolivia during this transition and new elections. “
