The High commissioner of the Republic Dominique Sorain and the Country’s President, Edouard Fritch, co-chaired Tuesday morning, the third committee of the project on ” the center of memory of the nuclear tests in French Polynesia. This topic is mobilising all actors : the State, the Country, associations, scientists, civil society. It has the aim of designing a place of memory educational for all, and in the first place the Polynesians, in a process of seeking the truth and in a peaceful atmosphere.
The High commissioner and the President of the Country have reaffirmed the principles underlying the creation of this centre of memory : dialogue and transparency.
The first meeting of the installation, which was held on January 24, 2018, in the presence of Ms. Annick GIRARDIN, minister of overseas, has officially relaunched the process of creating a site dedicated to the fact nuclear in French Polynesia. The second meeting was held on July 20, 2018, and validated the themes proposed by the working groups, which had gathered more than a dozen times to discuss them, both on the contents of the container.
This morning, the project committee has examined three points of step significant aspects in the progress of this folder :
· Results of diagnostics and studies performed on the future site of the centre of memory
The studies carried out by the public establishment Tahiti Nui Planning and Development (TNAD) state the necessary clean-up due to the presence of small quantities of asbestos and lead on the site. It is envisaged to clean up, and then deconstruct the ancient villa of the COMAR to free up valuable space in the creation of the future center, whose work will be funded by the Country.
· The selection of a programmiste
A call for tender was launched in September 2019 to select a programmiste, which will, on the basis of the work already being done by the members of the scientific group, to offer multiple content design and amenities possible. The selected candidate will begin his field work in the course of the month of November.
At the end, to design the building, in a competition for the architect will be launched in the first half of 2020.
· The choice of the name of the future place of memory
The project committee has validated the principle that the name of this organization is polynesian, sub-titled in French. The science working group has reflected, in connection with the three academies polynesian, and suggested : “Could Mahara “.
The appellation in the French language adopted is : “the Center of memory of the nuclear tests in French Polynesia “.
These names have been validated temporarily by the project committee and will now be used for the rest of the program.
These important decisions reflect the common will to move forward quickly on this important topic with concrete actions that will emerge in the coming months.
The members of the project committee were also informed of related actions undertaken by the Country.
The minister of Education has presented the adaptation in the school curricula to include, starting this year, the multidisciplinary education of the fact nuclear.
A restitution through a study commissioned by the Country and carried by the House of Sciences of Man in the Pacific has helped to make it a point to step of this research work are complementary.
On this occasion, the High commissioner reiterated the commitment of transparency of the State regarding access to the archives. The permissions of the consultation formulated by the researchers will be the subject of particular attention, while ensuring compliance with the legislation in force.
