Bogotá (Nov. 5/19). With the leadership of Colombia, which this year chairs the negotiations, from November 4 to 8, the 31 st Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer meets in Rome.

This meeting will seek agreements to address the situation of unexpected emissions in the atmosphere of the CFC-11 substance, which has been banned since 2010 and is highly detrimental to the ozone layer and climate stability.

Likewise, measures for the implementation of the Kigali Amendment, effective as of this year, will be discussed in order to contribute to the objective of the Paris Agreement to limit the increase in the temperature of the Planet below 1.5 degrees Celsius . Finally, initiatives on sustainable cold chains will be promoted to reduce food waste and improve energy efficiency.

Representatives of the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development participate in the Meeting of the Parties.

Colombia ratified the Montreal Protocol in 1992 and awaits the prompt ratification of the Kigali Amendment, once its review process is completed by the Constitutional Court.

The Montreal Protocol is the most effective environmental treaty in achieving its objective of recovering the ozone layer, through specific targets and schedules for the elimination of harmful substances.
