Government strongly condemns rioters for breaching public peace
***************************************************************

The Government today (November 2) strongly condemns rioters for going on a rampage in various districts including Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Central and Tsim Sha Tsui, seriously breaching the public peace.     A spokesman said that rioters popped up in various districts and occupied roads from this afternoon. They removed public facilities and various objects to block roads, trapping vehicles in traffic jams. Some people even even blocked the Island Eastern Corridor. These acts seriously affected the traffic and brought grave inconvenience to members of the public. Disregarding With public safety, the rioters hurled petrol bombs, set fires, threw bricks, placed nails on roads as well as deliberately vandalised and burnt shops, a media organisation and MTR stations. With no regard to law and order, these acts are outrageous and deserve the strongest condemnation.     In the face of the above-mentioned chaotic situations, to safeguard public safety and uphold the rule of law, Police were required to conduct dispersal operations and arrest the suspected offenders to restore social order.     The spokesman expressed regret that some people ignored the ruling of the Appeal Board on Public Meetings and Processions and violated the law by deliberately taking part in an unauthorised assembly in Victoria Park.
