A framework convention was signed on 20 September between the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the canton of Vaud through its Department of training, youth and culture (DFJC). This document reflects a collaboration already successful between the institutions and sets out the ambitions and common goals to move forward, together, in the face of the many challenges offered by the digitization of society. It also gives a framework to the cooperation already in place on digital education in a pilot phase in the canton.

A framework collaboration agreement in education was signed on 20 September 2019 to the EPFL by its president Martin Vetterli and for the Council of State by Cesla Amarelle, head of the DFJC. It sets out the areas and modalities of collaboration between the Township and the School in order to facilitate and implement specific projects in connection with digital literacy and pedagogical innovation in the areas of competence of the EPFL.

One of the major objectives is to provide training in canton vaud, is in a whole expertise from the EPFL, in particular through its dedicated center for science education (LEARN). This will allow teachers of all levels to acquire skills to meet the digital transition of our society. Their students will develop their skills in computer science, their uses of digital tools and a better understanding of the challenges of this transition. The upgrade of teachers is also formalized in the convention to respond to the directive of the swiss Conference of cantonal directors of public education (CDIP) on the introduction of informatics in the School of maturity as a compulsory subject as early as 2022.

Many areas of collaboration

This convention goes beyond the advances in digital education in the school in the canton of vaud. The organization of many activities in the fields of mathematics, informatics, natural sciences and technology (MINT), in particular in the framework of the program, or the courses in mathematics reinforced are also part of the collaboration that will be consolidated. Prospects of cooperation will be strengthened in the area of research, development and provision of tools and platforms-online course open to all (MOOC), or even numerical solutions against cyber-bullying. In general, this collaboration should also help to arouse the interest of students and especially girls to training scientists.

The EPFL welcomes the collaboration with the Canton pioneering and dynamic that enables her to put her skills in science education for the benefit of the whole system of education compulsory and post-compulsory. But also to exchange with the actors of the educational environment in order to develop and test new learning methods, and then analyze their impact and to propose practical and innovative educational.

A fruitful collaboration is strengthened

The signing of this agreement is renewable, which covers four years has been the opportunity for both parties to highlight their excellent collaboration and to congratulate the persons and entities that are flexible and open to implementing it. This collaboration enables EPFL to concretize a partnership precursor, and the State of Vaud to take advantage of unique competencies at the national level.
