Money and debt advisors from the Money Smart team have helped more than 150 residents to save hundreds of pounds over the last year.
Following their successful event “Squeezing the most out of Summer” the team are back for a second event to help people make their money stretch this winter.
The “Warmer and Wealthier this Winter” event takes place at the Atrium at Wakefield One on 30 October from 10am to 4pm.
It is open to everyone. No appointments are necessary. Just walk in and speak with a member of the Money Smart Team for advice on keeping warm, making the most of your money and avoiding the debt trap at Christmas.
Cllr Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Regeneration, said: “People may not automatically think of looking to their local council for financial advice but we are here to help. We want our residents to prosper. We have a lot of experts who can point them in the right direction. So please spread the word to friends and neighbours who you think may be in need. Make the time and come to this session.”
Since being launched a year ago, more than 150 people have taken advantage of our Money Smart advice service which has helped them to save hundreds of pounds, keep warmer and repair their homes.
Some have seen their disposable income increase by an average of £1,815 per year while others have reduced their fuel bills by £361 a year, on average.
So, in the run-up to Christmas, which can bring money worries for many people, we are holding another session to provide advice on:
- Making money stretch further
- Controlling debt
- Reducing fuel bills or switching to a better tariff
- Planning for Christmas
- Fixing or replacing faulty boilers
- Accessing low cost loans
- Accessing loans for home improvements
- Increasing savings
- Managing bills
Chloe (not her real name) was struggling with her finances after her boiler broke down. Our advisors found that she qualified for a range of benefits, including council tax benefits. She was also shown how to reduce her monthly expenses and increase her spending money. She also received a free fuel efficient boiler under our fuel poverty project and successfully applied for additional benefits.
“The service gave me a better outlook on things, helping me feel so much better and happier,” a grateful and relieved Chloe said.
The Credit Union will also be on hand once again to give practical advice on low cost loans, savings accounts and ways to help you cover your bills through their innovative Bill Payers account.
