Conference of the OCTA on the sustainable management of the oceans
The minister of Culture and the environment, Heremoana Maamaatuaiahutapu, participated in the conference of the OCTA, the association of the overseas countries and territories overseas, held in Brussels on 16 and 17 October.
The central theme of this conference was the sustainable management of the oceans. A powerful carbon sinks, and reservoirs of biodiversity, the oceans now occupy an important place in international discussions concerning climate change and the erosion of biodiversity.
The object of the meeting was to share views on the value of environmental, economic and social of the oceans, through projects, or flagship initiatives carried out by each of the countries and territories overseas (OCTS). The French Polynesia has been invited to speak on 3 sessions of high-level to share the actions taken, in progress, and the outlook for oceans.
In the margins of the conference, bilateral talks were held with New Caledonia, concerning agreements of cooperation, and with the member of the european parliament Stéphane Jewelry, which is committed to defending the interests of the OCTS French with the european Union.
At the end of the conference, the delegations of the OCTS have agreed to sign a declaration on the sustainable management of the oceans, and are committed to strengthening their respective actions in the matter.
