The Portuguese Government welcomes the holding of the Presidential elections in Tunisia on October 13, highlighting the democratic and civic manner in which the electoral act took place throughout the country.

Portugal congratulates all Tunisians who have exercised their right to vote thereby reinforcing democracy in Tunisia. The holding of the second Presidential elections since the Jasmine Revolution is another step towards the consolidation of the rule of law in Tunisia. Portugal reiterates its commitment and strong will to continue to deepen the bonds of friendship and excellent relations with Tunisia.

Portugal and Tunisia are neighboring countries, united by the Mediterranean, and their relationship, framed by the Treaty of Good Neighborhood, Cooperation and Friendship, signed in 2006, is at a level of excellence. The 5th Summit of Heads of Government, to be held in Portugal, will be an occasion to further strengthen our ties.
