The Bronx, NY – Congressman Jose E. Serrano (D-NY15) today released the following statement on Chairwoman Nita Lowey’s decision to not seek re-election next year:
“There are few members in Congress that I have worked with as closely throughout my entire career as Nita Lowey. As a fellow Bronxite, fellow member of the New York Congressional delegation, and fellow House Appropriations Committee member, we have fought more battles together than I can remember on behalf of our constituents and all New Yorkers. We actually joined the Appropriations Committee on the same day. As the first female chair of the Appropriations Committee, it has been an honor and a pleasure serving as a member of the committee under her groundbreaking leadership. She has always been a strong advocate for those in need, and for all who live in our state. She has been a leader in championing increased funding for Head Start, community health centers, and other important priorities. Her work in protecting women’s health on the Appropriations Committee has been unparalleled. I am proud to call her a colleague and friend. Her leadership will be sorely missed in Congress, but I am glad we will have the next year and a half to continue to fight for our city, state, and nation,” said Congressman Serrano.
