Reviewing how bus inspection systems and technical review plants work is the objective of the investigative commission that received the Minister of Transportation, Gloria Hutt.
All this, to prevent accidents such as the one that occurred in July of this year with a bus from the “Blue Line” company, which claimed six fatalities and dozens injured. The company would have adulterated the vehicle’s patent, because, due to traffic violations, it was prohibited to drive.
According to the Secretary of State, more than 75% of intercity buses were inspected by the Ministry of Transportation during 2018, up to 14 times each.
In addition, he assured that the buses, for the most part, are of high quality, particularly because between 2007 and 2014 the demands for their operation were increased. Stressing the need for them to have anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability program and fire detection and suppression system.
With these measures, the minister, while noting that they regret every death that occurred on the country’s routes, emphasized that of the total deaths in traffic accidents, only 0.8% are the result of mechanical failures of the vehicle in which they were transported and 0.4% due to road deficiencies.
However, in his opinion, no measure matters when there is a conscious intention to break the law. “When it is rationally decided to transfer the patent from one bus to another to pass a technical review, or the engine number is changed, or the documents are falsified, there is an intent, as the Rancagua prosecutor described it, it is a homicide” Minister Hutt said.
However, for those who make up the commission, there is still a point that can be perfected in the control processes, as raised by its president, Loreto Carvajal (PPD), by asking for more clarity on the procedures to control buses that make routes, both interurban as rural.
For its part, the deputy
