Representative David B. McKinley, P.E., (R-W.Va.) introduced legislation that extends the authorization of the Wheeling National Heritage Area (WNHA) for an additional five years.
Started in 2015, the Wheeling Heritage Area is run by the Wheeling Main Street program. The WNHA showcases Wheeling’s historic Victorian architecture, the waterfront park development, the historic city markets, and West Virginia Independence Hall.
“Wheeling Heritage has brought significant economic opportunity to our city by harnessing the historic character of downtown. Authorizing the extension of the WNHA will ensure future generations can appreciate the unique history of Wheeling,” McKinley said. “The National Heritage Area designation has helped to enhance Wheeling’s economic future and provides funds for revitalization efforts through preservation.”
Wheeling in August celebrated its 250th anniversary, and due in part to its designation as a National Heritage Area has been able to maintain many of its original buildings. To read the full text of the Wheeling National Heritage Area Reauthorization Act, H.R. 4377 click here.
