Washington, D.C. – Speaker Pelosi delivered remarks at the memorial service of Dr. Emily Clyburn. Below are the Speaker’s remarks:
Speaker Pelosi. Good evening, everyone.
It is with great sadness that so many of our colleagues from the House of Representatives join us today, and some tomorrow as well, to be with our brother, Mr. Clyburn, the Whip of the House – the distinguished Whip of the House – to pay tribute to Ms. Emily.
We all loved her so much. And to say thank you to Jim Clyburn and to Angela and to Mignon and to Jennifer for sharing her with us in so many ways.
For us in the House, she was not only a gentlelady, she was a strategic thinker. We would just say to Mr. Clyburn, what does Emily think?
And we knew we would get the straight answer, right Mr. Clyburn?
A gentlelady, and all of our colleagues come with wishes of everyone in the Congress of the United States. And, I’d like our House Members to please stand so they can be recognized as well.
[…] Dwight Evans, and now you’re sitting down, Gwen Moore, Sandy Bishop, and of course, John Lewis.
But, I also – from the Senate, two wonderful Senators, you know who they are: Senator Elizabeth Warren —
And Senator Kamala Harris.
On behalf of all of us, we have brought a flag flown over the Capitol the day that Emily left us. I can’t help but think that as she was making her passage, that flag was – soon as we got the word, within minutes Mr. Clyburn called us – soon as we got the word, the flag went up on the Capitol in honor of Emily England Clyburn. And I can –
– and I can identify Marcia Fudge – you remember, and we were there that morning, together? I can’t help but think of Emily and that flag was fluttering fiercer than ever, saying goodbye to her.
And what a joy it is to see so many of her friends and we all look forward to hearing her story. Now, I did not know I was going to be able to extend greetings, so I don’t know if the three minute rule applies to me –
But, I will take another moment to say: it’s not just the Members, it’s the Members’ families. It’s the staff on Capitol Hill. It’s our security to us here and so many of them have been a detail to Mr. Clyburn and now so many of them have said, ‘We’re going to miss Ms. Emily. Nobody has been kinder to us than Ms. Emily.’
Kind. Brilliant, Strategic. And isn’t she beautiful, today?
And, Mr. Clyburn, I hope that it is an absolute comfort to you, Angela, Jennifer and Mignon and your grandchildren and your extended family, which goes back at the church, that so many mourn your loss and are praying for you at this sad time.
And as a tribute to the choir, they had it just right: you ‘Never Would Have Made It’ without her.
Thank you, all.
