The Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, highlighted the importance of research, with higher education being part of the process, to enhance Portugal’s convergence with Europe. In Porto, during a congress of biomedical students in Portugal, the Minister said that “good research is particularly important in the path of increasing convergence with Europe”. “Today it is increasingly important to show Portugal as a country open to young people, doing good research, with higher education being part of this process,” he added, highlighting the opportunity to increase national influence in the European context. Manuel Heitor also highlighted some of the conclusions announced in June by the European Innovation Scoreboard, which characterized Portugal as an attractive country. “This is particularly important this year because European Commission data, announced in June, show Portugal as the country with the largest fraction of innovative small businesses and also with an attractive and innovation-friendly research environment.”
