Waikato researchers converged in Melbourne recently for the 22nd International Conference on Composite Materials (ICCM), where one of the university’s researchers received a top award.
Engineering academic Professor Kim Pickering was presented with the 2018 Most Highly Cited Paper Award of composites Part A – an award that recognises a researcher’s paper as having received the largest number of citations in the previous year.
The paper A review of recent developments in natural fibre composites and their mechanical performance was co-authored by Professor Pickering, and was the piece of work that landed her the award.
“It is great for the work at Waikato University to be recognized in such a way. This is further support for us punching well above our weight in the research space,” she says.
Professor Pickering is well-known for work in bio-polymers, and has more recently been focusing on tailoring properties of composites through fibre treatment.
Her work has involved the creation of biodegradable plastics which are more sustainable, cost effective and cause less harm to the environment.
“With New Zealand’s resources of wood and other natural fibres, there is great potential to tap into composite design and process technology to produce cost efficient materials,” says Professor Pickering.
The ICCM is the premier international conference in the field of composite materials, and covers polymer matrix composites, metal matrix composites, ceramic matrix composites, natural fibre composites, fibre metal laminates, fibres and resins and all other classes of composites. Approximately 1500 experts from around the world attended the ICCM event this year.
Dr Tighe spoke on her research topic Thermographic assessment of fibre reinforced 3D printing filament, while Dr Yang presented his work on Cost-effective synthesis of copper/diamond composite with acceptable thermophysical properties.
