MIL OSI-C. Mediterranean Region: Portugal
Prime Minister António Costa said the day of signing of the contract for the purchase of five KC-390 military transport aircraft is “a particularly happy day for four reasons”, in his speech at the ceremony held in Évora at the Embraer factory. .
«It’s a good day for our Armed Forces, it’s a good day for our innovation and industry system, it’s a good day for the city of Évora, the Alentejo as a whole and territorial cohesion and it’s a great day for the relations between Portugal and Brazil », he explained.
The contracts for the purchase of the five transport aircraft include components made in Portugal at Embraer factories in Évora and Alverca (formerly OGMA), and are intended to replace the Air Force Hercules C-130.
The purchase, which represents a total of € 827 million of the Military Programming Law, also includes a flight simulator, aircraft maintenance for the first 12 years and the adaptation of infrastructures. Council of Ministers of July 11.
The Prime Minister underlined that the Portuguese Armed Forces “today, in the context of the implementation of the Military Programming Law, are reinforcing their aeronautical capabilities” and are “endowed” with a new generation of tactical and strategic support aircraft. to missions of public interest, which may replace the C-130 squadron which, since 1977, has been serving the Portuguese Air Force ».
Dual Civil-Military Use
António Costa also said that “investment in security and defense” should be of dual use, with the KC-390 aircraft design having “a very important catalytic effect on the development of the capacity of the Portuguese aviation industry as a whole”.
If today we can talk about an aeronautical cluster in Portugal, “this is largely due to this project” and “its potential mobilization of investment skills and industrial capacity building,” he said. This cluster already represents 3.3% of national exports.
This project has been, and continues to be, ‘a potential enabler and aggregator of industrial capacity, our scientific and innovation system’, he said.
The existence of the Embraer factory, and ofsimilar investments, in Évora «is a very important factor for territorial cohesion in Portugal».
Finally, Portugal and Brazil, which “have always been allies and sister countries”, have relations that “correspond to permanent interests” of both states and the KC-390 is an example of this: “It is effectively a cooperative project, jointly developed by the different entities in Brazil and Portugal »and which has already originated other similar industrial projects with Embraer.
The Minister of National Defense, João Gomes Cravinho, highlighted “Portugal is acquiring the best aircraft in the market for the specific operational and logistic requirements of our country”.
“The KC-390 is an intercontinental-range aircraft with true multi-mission capabilities and capable of strategic and tactical civil and military operations,” he said.
