The Regional Planning Workshop for the North Pacific and Western Pacific Marginal Seas Towards the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), organized by regional partners of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (IOC-UNESCO), with the financial support of the Government of Japan, will provide a platform for advancing dialogue among scientists and academia, policymakers and managers, civil society organizations, ocean businesses and industries, and donors and foundations towards the identification and development of solution-oriented approaches to ocean sustainability.

The workshop seeks to:

  • communicate the purpose and expected results of the Decade to all stakeholders in the region, including marine scientific community;
  • identify knowledge gaps and regional scientific questions or priorities, including additional research and development priorities, that need to be tackled in order to meet the six societal outcomes that the Decade aims to achieve by 2030;
  • elaborate plans to address these science questions/priorities, including existing and potential programmes, partnerships and resources;
  • address cross-cutting priorities that are crucial to the success of the Decade such as capacity building and marine technology transfer, financing and partnerships, data and information sharing, and knowledge exchange and communication; and
  • connect with key stakeholders in the region, including marine scientific communities, to build ambition and amplify engagement with the entire ocean community to prepare for the Decade.

The workshop follows the First Global Planning Meeting for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and a Pacific Community Workshop on the Decade.
