Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik released the following statement after the Department of Defense released a letter designating Fort Drum as their pick for an East Coast Missile Defense Site:
“I am proud to announce that after years of leading the effort on behalf of Fort Drum on the House Armed Services Committee, the Department of Defense has announced that Fort Drum is the preferred designation for an East Coast Missile Defense Site,” said Congresswoman Stefanik.
“Since day one in office, I have served as the number one advocate for Fort Drum and our region and worked every day to achieve this designation.
“I led the effort to unite much of the New York Congressional Delegation around the selection of Fort Drum as the preferred site and I thank my colleagues for their support.
“I also want to thank the countless community groups including Advocate Drum (FDRLO), state elected officials, and the tens of thousands of families for their advocacy on behalf of our region. Most of all, thank you to the troops of the 10th Mountain Division for their service to our nation.
“Climb to Glory!”
“As the author of the congressional language to establish the East Coast Missile Defense site to defend our country against adversaries like Iran, I can attest to Elise Stefanik’s impressive advocacy in securing this site in her district,” said Congressman Mike Turner (R-OH-10.) “Her tireless work was critical in securing this huge win for her community. I have no doubt that the men and women at Fort Drum are well equipped to keep us safe from our adversaries.”
“Elise has been absolutely dogged in leading this effort on behalf of Fort Drum and New York State,” said Congressman John Katko (R-NY-24.) “She has worked hand in hand and led the delegation to ensure Fort Drum was the preferred location for an East Coast Missile Defense site. This will be a huge win for both of our districts and I am so proud of her significant ability to deliver this enormous result for the region.”
The Department’s letter follows tireless advocacy by Congresswoman Stefanik since her first term in Congress for Fort Drum to receive the East Coast Missile Defense Site designation. Congresswoman Stefanik successfully included language into the NDAA that requires the Secretary of Defense to submit their designation report to Congress, and requires the Secretary of Defense to designate an interceptor site for potential future deployment in the continental United States. This letter from the DoD came just two weeks after. A copy of the letter is attached to this email.
