Leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn at Prime Ministers Questions (PMQs) today raised the abysmal failure of this Government’s industrial strategy, as analysis by the Labour Party shows a fall in apprenticeships and employment in manufacturing since the creation of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Labour analysis of ONS figures released in May show there were 147,000 fewer people employed in the manufacturing industry than when BEIS was created in July 2016. The analysis looks at employment in the quarter prior to the creation of the Department and in the latest comparable quarter.

Meanwhile, analysis of the Department for Education’s apprenticeships and traineeships data shows apprenticeships in the industry dropping by over a fifth between 2016/17 and 2017/18, with nearly 16,000 fewer starts in engineering and manufacturing roles.

Rebecca Long-Bailey MP, Shadow Secretary for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy, said:

“This is further evidence – as if it was needed – that the Government’s industrial strategy is non-existent.

These findings come on top of even more bad news from the car industry last week, with the closure Ford in Wales, and Tory leadership contenders pushing for a No Deal Brexit that would be devastating for British manufacturing.

With the Conservatives undermining British industry at every turn, only Labour can deliver a comprehensive Industrial Strategy and an economy that works for the many and not the few.”
