Mr President! Ladies and gentlemen, Dear soldiers of our army, the keep track of this debate! This debate is once again visible, the great responsibility of this Parliament, the great responsibility of every single member of this house. Especially visible this responsibility for the members who have sent in their constituency, a German army base from which soldiers in missions abroad.

My soldiers, my scouts in Freyung in the Bavarian forest – I may have to say “” my, because I was very, very long time with the soldiers of the local site in the deployment abroad – came back in the spring of 2018, a MINUSMA deployment. Currently, the preparation for the next MINUSMA-participation starting in the autumn of this year, and the following posting in the year 2021 is already in sight. A fundamental difference between then and now is: The quota period in the army has been from four to six months. I think few in this house, the discretion, what does that mean for the soldiers and especially their families can

MINUSMA is one of the most important, but also one of the most difficult missions of the UN. Our army is doing outstanding work. The soldiers of all rank groups, I say a heartfelt thank you for this use.

(Applause from the CDU/CSU as well as from members of the SPD and the Abg. Dr. Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann [FDP])

We include, of course, all who have lost in the Mission of your life, in our thoughts.

Ladies and gentlemen, have visited after the visit of our foreign Minister in Mali, more recently, representatives of the UN security Council, Mali. At the same time, suspected fighters of a fighter militia of the Dogon ethnic group have committed a massacre in the village of Ogossagou that belongs to the ethnic group of the Peul,. At least 400 huts were torched, and in an arbitrary 150 people – the elderly, women, children – killed. Such reports make it stunned. Such ethnic conflicts let us back, of course, perplexed with the question of whether the whole of our Engagement in Africa will ever bear fruit. A few years ago Mali was considered a model country, and all of a sudden, it – in 2012 – before the decay.

Germany backed up with its commitment in Mali in the stabilization of the country and the entire Sahel region. It is also in our interest

(Jan Korte [THE LEFT]: You can also be linked in addition!)

Ultimately, we have stopped with MINUSMA in the past six years, the state of decay of Mali. Islamist militias have not succeeded to establish a fundamentalist theocracy. The presidential elections in the past year have gone well. It is also to ensure the safety and security of the parliamentary elections this year.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is, as so often, when we talk about Africa: The path is very long

Thank You Very Much.

(Applause from the CDU/CSU and ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS, as well as the Abg. Dr. Daniela De Ridder [SPD])
