Massey University has launched the School of Built Environment to meet the growing demand for expertise in the construction industry in New Zealand

The new school is based in Auckland, in the College of Sciences, and offers the only bachelor’s degrees in construction management and quantity surveying in New Zealand.  Professor Monty Sutrisna has been appointed as head of the new school and will join on April 1.  Professor Sutrisna is from Curtin University, Western Australia, where he was the head of construction management for five years. In the interim. Professor Emeritus Ian Maddox is acting head of school.

College of Sciences Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Ray Geor says industry engagement, research and the construction offerings have gone from strength-to-strength and the school will continue development in the sector.

“There is a need for contemporary and industry-relevant study programmes and research and our students will be able to work with world-class academics complemented by industry input across all levels of study.

“Smart construction, project management and environmental sustainability are just some of the key research areas that our researchers specialise in, and Massey is leading the way, helping to create better efficiencies and resilience, as well as healthy and sustainable buildings.”
