During a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council, President Petro Poroshenko stressed that Ukraine understood the decision of the USA to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. “We believe this decision is justified and corresponds to the present security situation both in the European continent and in the world as a whole,” the Head of State emphasized.

The President noted that Russia’s successive undermining of the arms control system, including in the framework of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe and the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, prompts Ukraine and its allies to seek adequate means for maintaining security. “I would like to emphasize separately that it removes certain restrictions and obligations that Ukraine has observed earlier,” he said.

The Head of State stressed: “Under these circumstances, considering that the Budapest memorandum is blocked by Russia and therefore does not work, and we have not yet become a NATO member-state, as it was blocked until 2014, we must seriously consider the additional strengthening of the defense potential of our state”.

“Hence, I underscore our right to create modern and effective armament systems for self-defense, including powerful missile systems. It will become a strategic factor in deterring the Russian aggressor and provide new capabilities for the troops to defeat the enemy at a great distance,” Petro Poroshenko said. The President noted that the Armed Forces of Ukraine received new opportunities.
