Of the 1 426 quarries in the area of competence of the Central Public Administration, 191 quarries (13%) are in a critical situation, requiring signaling (87%), sealing (74%) and carrying out previous studies and / or execution projects technical solutions suitable for carrying out structural interventions, the replacement of defense zones and the stabilization of heaps (93%), in an estimated investment of 14.3 million euros to be borne by the quarry operators or owners of the lands where they are located.

Measures

The Council of Ministers determined:

– That the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology notify all explorers of the quarries or the owners of the lands where they are located in order to fulfill their responsibilities and obligations.

– That the Mining Development Company carry out the signaling of the quarries in a critical situation, in order to guarantee the protection of people and property and the environment.

In the alternative, in case of non-compliance of the explorers and / or owners, the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) will report to the Public Prosecutor’s Office the crime of disobedience and the Mining Development Company (EDM) conducting previous studies and / or execution projects.

The Government also decided to authorize and provide the DGEG and EDM, through the Environmental Fund, with the indispensable resources and provide for the adoption of the contractual procedures allowed by law for situations of obvious urgency.
