Sinn Féin MLA Jemma Dolan has said the changing dynamic has sparked a new conversation on the constitutional future of Ireland.
The party’s spokesperson on Irish unity was commenting after attending a party discussion in Ballyfermot on the campaign to build a new and united Ireland.
Jemma Dolan said:
“More and more people are now discussing the prospect of a united Ireland. It’s everywhere; online, on our television screens and in everyday conversations.
“There is a changing dynamic across the island. Partition has run out of road and has failed the people of Ireland from the very outset.
“The reckless ‘crash Brexit’ agenda of the Tory/DUP pact seeks to drive our economy over a cliff and erect a hard border on this island.
“We have been very clear, this won’t be tolerated and will be met with demand for a referendum to give people a say on which union this wish to be part of; the union with Britain or the European Union.
“The Good Friday Agreement provides the necessary framework for this poll, providing citizens here with a democratic route to deciding their own future.
“The Irish government have a role to play also and preparations for unity must begin now in advance of any referendum.”
